Student TestimonialsStudents on placements at ARS Ltd

'My work placement at Archaeological Research Services lasted two weeks, working Monday to Friday between the dates of 14th and the 25th of April 2008.

In the placement I digitised data from an excavation at Dale View Quarry. I also spent two days at Calke Abbey helping to dig a trench to see if the area around an old, disused deer shelter was actually a bank and ditch. Unfortunately, from what we found, there was no evidence to prove this theory but we did find a sheep skeleton! In the later parts of the placement I prepared and processed charred material to be sent off for radiocarbon dating. This placement was a good experience of working at a company, instead of just working at school. There is a major difference between the two because there is no skiving off like some people would do at school. If you do then you will be without a job and without money.

I have a good interest in archaeology and all things historic and so this placement suited me perfectly. If you have any interest in history or just archaeology as a whole then this is definitely the placement for you. The field work is a very good experience but don’t think it’s all fun and games because there is plenty of digging to be done and plenty of spades to dig with, so come ready! The staff are very friendly and will help you with anything you need to do if you don’t understand it or aren’t sure about something. They will answer all questions so don’t hesitate to ask them about a dig or artefacts that are laid out on the table.'

'I have enjoyed my work experience particularly digging in Birchover Quarry even though it was very hot and, unfortunately, we didn’t find many artefacts.

I have learnt about archaeology and was quite surprised how many prehistoric sites there are around Derbyshire. I have done many different jobs but my favourite has been to take pictures of the All Saints Parish church in Bakewell for a project as it was very interesting and I enjoyed exploring it using the camera.'

Ross Goodyear (Anthony Gell School, Wirksworth)
